The Vieux Bassin and the half-timbered houses
Across the estuary, via the Normandy Bridge. The Vieux Bassin with its tall narrow houses reflected in the water, the entirely wooden church of Sainte-Catherine, the quays and the galleries. One of the most painted harbours in France — Boudin and Monet both passed through.
The largest wooden church in France, built in the 15th century by ship's carpenters after the Hundred Years' War. A double nave vaulted like an upturned hull, and a separate bell tower standing on the square — a one-of-a-kind that no photo does justice.
The quai Sainte-Catherine lines up its terraces facing the masts; across the water, the Lieutenance guards the entrance to the basin. This is where Eugène Boudin was born, and where Monet and Jongkind set up their easels. You lunch here facing the boats, between two galleries.
