The pebble beach, the open-sea wind
This is our own beach. Six minutes on foot from the house along the Durdent, or nine by car. A long curve of pebbles wedged between two white cliffs, an early-1900s casino, and silence in winter.

The cliff & the trail
The GR21 trail runs right past. Twenty minutes' climb and you're above the Channel with 80 m of chalk beneath your feet. At sunset, it's one of the finest views on the Alabaster Coast.
Round pebbles, clear water, lifeguarded swimming in summer. The casino-restaurant does moules-frites facing the sea — not unforgettable, but it's where we have a drink as the sun goes down.

Getting there — what to know
Early morning for the raking light on the chalk, or late afternoon when the walkers head home. Avoid Sunday lunchtime in July.
